Essential Summer Travel Tips for Your Next Adventure

Don't delay -- begin your summer travel planning today!

While it's only mid-February and summer may feel ages away, now is the time to start your summer holiday planning. Don't miss your chance to spend some quality time with the kiddos -- off screens ideally -- and soak up some sun.

If you're overwhelmed and looking for some travel help -- we're here! Check out details on our bespoke planning services and reach out for more details!

Here are some things to consider:

Timing -- If Europe is your ideal destination, late May through June is a sweet spot for summer travel. The weather is comfortable -- not excruciatingly hot in southern spots, less rain in northern locales. The sea may be a little cooler, but the crowds will be less oppressive. Most European schools are in session until late June/early July, so you will not be competing with Euro families for space.

Flights -- There's no sugar coating it -- flights from the US to Europe are high. Check now to start benchmarking costs. Set up alerts via your preferred service (Google Flights, Kayak, Expedia, etc.) Consider alternate gateway cities and debate low-cost carriers to get you to your final destination. Keep in mind that low-cost carriers generally tack on additional charges for seats, bags (hold and cabin), accessing boarding passes, etc. Take these costs into consideration -- they may not be such a bargain after all. Here's a quick write-up on our approach.

Trains -- If you score flights, but plan to travel extensively while on the ground, explore train travel as an alternative to driving. Europe has a wonderful rail system that often is less expensive, more convenient, and more comfortable than driving or flying. Check out Trainline for planning and booking.

Packing -- Save time, hassle, and money by packing small. Convert to a carry-on-only traveler with my tried and tested tips.

Destinations -- Now the fun stuff! Gather your kiddos and debate the merits of holiday stops. While you can hit the popular locales (London, Paris, Rome, etc.), do not overlook some other options:

  • Greece: If you're interested in island hopping, instead of Mykonos or Santorini, seek out some other options that are just as beautiful but less crowded and more affordable. Crete is an amazing destination for families and half the price of Santorini. Or check out Naxos or Paros for a smaller island experience with a more laid-back vibe.

  • Italy: While it can be tempting to follow the herd and hit Rome, Florence, Venice, Cinque Terre, or Amalfi Coast, do not overlook less traveled options. Drive through Umbria or Tuscany for farm stays and enchanting vistas. Visit Puglia or Calabria for charming seaside and mountain villages and beautiful beaches. Hike the Dolomites, and visit Bolzano to experience the intersection of Italian and Germanic culture. More tips on Italy travel with kiddos.

  • Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro: By no means unknown, these countries are often overlooked but should be on your must-see list. Mediterranean climate, historic cities, beautiful beaches, stunning caves...what's not to love?

  • Portugal: This affordable, easy-to-navigate, stunning country should be on your radar. Stunning beaches, lively and colorful cities, delicious wine, and plenty of activities to satisfy all -- Portugal is fantastic. Don't believe me? Get a kiddo's opinion.

  • Islands: Don't forget about the islands easily accessible from the mainland by either ferry, flight, or train. Sicily is enchanting with ruins, beaches, vineyards, hiking, and cuisine that will appeal to all. Sardinia and Corsica are gems that deserve weeklong stays of their own. All are less frequented by Americans, loved by Europeans, and should be on your list.
